Mobile LDR brachytherapy in the Ambulatory Surgery Center

August, 2003 -- The urologists have waited several years for brachytherapy to be approved in the ASC environment by CMS. In the past the brachytherapy procedure was dominated by radiation oncologists and hospitals who controlled and drove the process of treating patients that qualified for the permanent brachytherapy seed implant for prostate cancer.

Prostate Centers of America (PCA) is a company led and managed by brachytherapy industry experts, who have spent many years developing brachytherapy programs built around urologists. PCA is not physician owned but is a company whose expertise is in moving medical treatment modalities which have been approved by CMS for reimbursement in the ASC and physician's office from the hospital to the physician owned or utilized ASC and practice office and building Limited Liability Corporations (LLC) for physician investment around the treatment technology.

Specific to brachytherapy, the urologists now have the opportunity to control and manage the procedure and quality assurance program of LDR brachytherapy seed implantation for their patients in their ASCs. There are additional opportunities of investment into a business structure similar to lithotripsy surrounding the brachytherapy seed implant program if you are not an owner in an ASC.

CMS has approved reimbursement in the ASC to begin July 1, 2003. In turn, PCA is currently working in many areas of the country to establish the business entities which will operate and manage the program for the urologists.
